In addition to celebrating Socktoberfest, I'm having my own private little Rocktoberfest celebration. So it's supposed to be just listening to music I love, but have been ignoring recently, or to find some cool new music, or whatever. Just to love the music!
So I've been listening to Nine Inch Nails a lot. I remember the first time I heard The Downward Spiral. I hated it! Hate hate hate! I liked the radio songs, Closer and Hurt, but nothing else stood out as good. I always liked The Fragile though, but now I find it pales in comparison. It's funny that my most unloved NIN album could become my favourite. It's interesting how much taste changes over time.
Also been loving Neurosis and Tribes of Neurot. Neurosis, possibly the only band left that I NEED to see. I can't really think of any other musical events that would be so devastating and wonderful that I would so desperately love to see. (anyone want to go to the Netherlands next April? ha ha) Is it a big deal for a band to still be around and together after 18 years? In a lot of ways, I suppose it is (when compared with the short lifespans of most pop musicmakers...) but look at Ozzy, look at Slayer, Madball, The Vandals, Zakk Wylde... (I was going to use Wilco as an example, but maybe 11 years isn't quite enough)
An amusing anecdote: Often I listen to the mix cds left in the car by the brothers rather than finding something of my own to listen to. Mark, in particular, has quite good taste (if you ignore the offensive rap he likes). So there is this cd I've been listening to for months. It has some good stuff-Sabbath, Rise Over Run, Black Label Society, etc. There was one song that baffled me though. It sounded vaguely familiar, but I had no clue. It took me two months to recognize a song by Metallica! (Dyers Eve, off of And Justice for All - 1988) That made me laugh.
Anyways, Thanksgiving supper. I made roast potatoes with Marmite. I hope they taste good :) My cheesecake turned out nicely. Mmm cheesecake.

That looks like an amazing cheesecake recipe. Have you tried it yet (tried eating it, I mean)?
I am waiting for my pumpkin pie to cool. I'm by myself for Thanksgiving this year, so no turkey or anything - I'm just going to stuff myself with pumpkin pie.
